Health Coach Tip - How Inflammation Impacts Mental Health
Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury or infection, but did you know that it can also have an impact on your mental health? Recent research has shown that chronic inflammation may be linked to a number of mental and psychiatric health disorders, including depression and anxiety.
So, what exactly is chronic inflammation?
Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation that persists over a long period of time. This type of inflammation can be caused by a number of factors, including poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, and exposure to toxins.
When the body is in a state of chronic inflammation, it can lead to a number of changes in the brain that can contribute to mental health problems. For example, chronic inflammation can lead to decreased levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, and can also cause damage to brain cells.
Reducing chronic inflammation is therefore crucial to supporting mental health.
A few tips to help reduce inflammation:
- Eat an anti-inflammatory diet: include foods that are rich in anti-inflammatory nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and antioxidants. Foods like fatty fish, nuts and seeds, fruits, and vegetables can help reduce inflammation.
- Exercise regularly: Regular exercise has been shown to reduce inflammation in the body.
- Manage stress: Stress can trigger inflammation in the body, so it's important to find ways to manage stress. This can include practices such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, or spending time in nature.
- Get enough sleep: Sleep is essential for reducing inflammation in the body. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
