Foundational to optimal blood sugar management is a low-carb diet, stress management, adequate sleep, and regular exercise. But, did you know that several herbal teas can also play a role in optimizing metabolic health? These teas contain compounds called polyphenols, which may help to enhance blood sugar regulation. Drinking tea can also increase hydration which is critical for healthy blood sugar levels. Here are some teas that you should know about:
Green Tea
Consumption of green tea may help to regulate blood sugar levels. A systematic review found that green tea consumption was able to reduce fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1C for individuals with and without diabetes. Hemoglobin A1C tests average levels of blood sugar over the previous three months.
Cinnamon Tea
Supplementation with cinnamon has been popular amongst those with a goal to lower blood sugar. The blood sugar lowering effects of cinnamon supplements may extend to cinnamon tea as well. One study found that when people drank cinnamon tea before a sugary solution, it improved their blood sugar responses, compared to those who just consumed the sugary solution alone. Interestingly, cinnamon is thought to slow sugar release into the bloodstream, improve cellular glucose metabolism, and enhance sensitivity to insulin. While these benefits are exciting, there is still a need for more research!
Turmeric Tea
The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, may help to lower blood sugar – a review of studies drew an association between higher curcumin intake and lower blood sugar. Although there is a need for more research, turmeric tea may be a wonderful measure to take for blood sugar health! Pro tip: Add some black pepper in your tea to increase the bioavailability and benefits of curcumin.
Hibiscus tea
Hibiscus tea has been shown to be anti-inflammatory and beneficial for blood pressure. In addition, it may also have a role in combating insulin resistance!
