Does the word ‘Resveratrol’ ring a bell? When people speak of the benefits of red wine, ‘resveratrol’ is often referenced. Resveratrol is a phytonutrient found in grapes, and thus, red wine – however, the amount of wine that you would need to consume to reap the benefits of resveratrol, would be wildly unhealthy. Healthier sources of resveratrol including pistachios, cranberries, cacao, and supplements, deliver a wide array of benefits possibly including: improved blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, cholesterol, and markers of aging

Reduces blood pressure

Resveratrol may help produce nitric oxide, which causes blood vessels to relax, thereby reducing blood pressure.

Improves insulin sensitivity

Resveratrol may improve insulin sensitivity, by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, both considered drivers of several diseases as well as the processes of aging. Resveratrol may also activate AMPK, which helps keep blood sugar in check by improving glucose metabolism.

Improves cholesterol

Resveratrol has been shown to support healthy cholesterol levels. It may also help prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which can otherwise lead to plaque build-up in arteries.

Improves lifespan in organism models

Throughout the majority of research in organism models, resveratrol enhanced lifespan through impacting genetic expression and exerting similar effects seen with fasting. Resveratrol may also activate sirtuin (SIRT-1) expression, which is associated with anti-inflammatory and lifespan enhancing or anti-aging effects

Protects from cancer

Resveratrol is also thought to confer cancer-protecting effects by impacting cancer cell genetic expression, growth and hormonal communication.

The anti-aging and disease-preventing effects of resveratrol are nothing short of impressive – from improving metrics of heart health and metabolism to protecting against diseases of aging. If you plan to consume more resveratrol to reap these benefits, remember that resveratrol is fat-soluble meaning that its absorption is enhanced when consumed alongside fat!
