Health Coach Tip - Surprisingly Healthy Foods

Many of the health foods we eat are obvious (we all know to eat our greens!), but there are some sneaky healthy foods that you might not have thought of… here are a few you should add to your meal rotation.

Oysters

Oysters are known as an aphrodisiac and are a fun start to a with a date. But did you know that oysters are also a source of many hard to get nutrients? They are high in vitamin D, B12, zinc, copper, and selenium, plus they have a decent amount of protein. It’s the zinc that is connected to their aphrodisiac status as it’s a key component for testosterone production - a hormone that boosts sexual desire in both men and women.

Liver

Liver is rich in vitamins, minerals, and just about everything! Organ meats are an important element of the Paleo diet and according to Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, they are high in B vitamins, the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, minerals like phosphorus, iron, copper, magnesium, iodine, calcium, potassium, sodium, selenium, zinc and manganese, and even have a decent amount of omega-3 fats. You can’t go wrong.

Sardines

Fatty cold-water fish are greatly missing in most people’s diet – yet they are the easiest absorbed sources of omega 3s. Because sardines are small they are also much less likely to contain worrying mercury levels. Small, canned sardines can be eaten whole and are also a great source of calcium from their bones.

Jicama

Jicama is a root vegetable that is crispy and tastes great raw or cooked. It's low on the glycemic index, mostly made of water, and it's high in vitamin C and fiber. Jicama happens to be high in one of our favorite types of fiber, prebiotic fiber, that is indigestible for humans, but feeds the probiotics in our gut. Like a fertilizer that enables your gut garden – and immunity – to thrive.
