Health Coach Tip - Your Sustainable Kitchen

People are spending more time than ever in the kitchen, a perfect opportunity to create some sustainable kitchen habits. Pick one of these ideas and build up your sustainable practices.

Sustainable Kitchen Habits:

  1. Shop at a Farmer's Market - Support local farms and get delicious food.
  2. Eat Seasonally - If you are doing #1, you are already eating seasonally.
  3. Invest in Glass Canning Jars - Get different sizes (I like 8oz and 16oz) to store dry goods, dressings, leftovers, nuts/seeds... you name it, you can store it in there. Glass jars help you avoid toxins from plastic containers and reduce trash from packaging.
  4. Buy in Bulk - Not only is it cheaper, but you need something to put in all of those canning jars! Bring your own bags to the store and transfer the food to the canning jars at home. Foods like nuts and seeds, dry beans, and spices are often sold in bulk at health food stores.
  5. Make your own Dressings and Condiments - a great way to know what is in your food and to avoid plastic and other packaging.
  6. Learn to Preserve Food - canning, pickling, drying... there are many ways to preserve food. If you buy from the farmer's market at the height of the season, you can get deals on produce like tomatoes that you can turn into sauce to use through the winter.
  7. Save Your Scraps - avoid more food waste by freezing your foods scraps to drop off at a local compost bin or turn them into vegetable stock.
