We stand at a crossroads in medicine today. Having practiced developmental pediatrics for the past 25 years, I have become increasingly frustrated by an alarming trend and find myself asking why we are drugging our children for the way they behave?
Many patients who first come to me in their 50s or beyond are on two or more medications, as are an increasing number of younger people. Often, the negative effects of the first medication lead to the prescription of a second drug . . . On and on it goes, with everyone gaining weight, feeling old, and getting more and more discouraged.
