Health Coach Tip - Vitamin C and Skin Health

Do you know about the relationship between vitamin C and skin health? Vitamin C is both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrient which contributes to skin health in a variety of ways. Healthy sources of vitamin C include:

  • Bell peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Strawberries
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Red cabbage
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Strawberries
  • Citrus fruits

Vitamin C May Improve Signs of Skin Aging

Research suggests that vitamin C supplementation may improve skin aging by restoring the appearance of wrinkles. Studies have also found that individuals who have a diet higher in vitamin C have fewer wrinkles!

Vitamin C Helps Boost Skin Collagen

Vitamin C is one of the most essential nutrients for synthesizing collagen, a protein which keeps skin youthful, strong, elastic and hydrated. Collagen is critical to hair, muscle and skin health. However, collagen production decreases with age contributing to drooping skin. Consuming foods rich in vitamin C likely contributes to enhanced collagen production.

Vitamin C May Prevent Skin Damage From Sun Exposure

Research suggests that Vitamin C may prevent skin damage from UVB rays. Topically, vitamin C has been shown to be photoprotective. However, a small study found that oral supplementation with a combination of vitamin C and E also protects the skin from sun damage. There is a need for more studies to investigate whether this holds true with vitamin C supplementation or consumption alone.

Enhance your skin health by consuming more vitamin C-rich foods. Both supplementation and topical vitamin C creams may also contribute improved skin. If you’re interested in supplementation or topical use, reach out to your doctor or your dermatologist.
