Intermittent Fasting: Menopause and Beyond

With cycling and perimenopause behind you, you can pursue intermittent fasting with few restrictions or time constraints. Many women practice it daily for weight loss, for weight maintenance, or for its health benefits. This is, oftentimes, the sweet spot for IF and women. You are no longer tethered to watching and waiting for a menstrual cycle each month, or worrying about supplies such as tampons or pads and schedules. You can much more easily integrate IF into your lifestyle.

What are the benefits?

For one thing, intermittent fasting helps slow down the aging process, because it regenerates your entire system starting with your cells and mitochondria, which I’m sure you’ll be happy to hear. Moreover, intermittent fasting can help reduce hot flashes and many other uncomfortable symptoms.

There are lots of benefits of intermittent fasting for you at this stage in your life. A recap:

  • More energy
  • Weight loss and control and less hunger
  • Increase in lean muscle mass, supported by proper diet and strength training
  • Stronger immunity and less inflammation
  • Protection against some diseases due to increased cell renewal
  • Reduction in stress
  • Improvement of insulin sensitivity in overweight women
  • Less depression and anxiety
  • Greater cognitive function

What’s not to love? Women of all ages can benefit from intermittent fasting. However, it’s important to learn how to practice intermittent fasting correctly and safely—which I cover in detail later in this book.

Although each one of us experiences life in an individual way, I’ve observed that women who handle hormonal ups and downs the best are those who approach female changes as a natural progression of their lives rather than see them as a struggle. No matter what life stage you’re in, now is the perfect time to look in the mirror and affirm to yourself, “I need to take care of myself now so I can have the quality of life I’m looking for.”
