Health Coach Tip - Tea for Better Sleep

Having trouble sleeping? There are many strategies to help, including sipping on a freshly brewed cup of tea, or two. Here are some teas that have a rich history of being used for better sleep:

Chamomile tea

Chamomile has long been used for its sedative properties. Chamomile contains the plant compound apigenin, which is known as a muscle relaxant and sleep-inducer. A meta-analysis reviewing 12 studies, concluded that chamomile tea improves sleep quality.

Valerian tea

Valerian root increases levels of the neurotransmitter and sleep-regulator, gamma-aminobutyric acid(GABA), which has a sedative effect. A systematic review including 10 studies pertaining to sleep, concluded that valerian could be an effective herbal remedy to promote sleep.

Passionflower tea

Passionflower teas and tinctures have anti-anxiety and sedative properties. A study showed that for those with insomnia, 2 weeks of daily passionflower extract improved total sleep time. Similar but more tea-centric, another study showed that 1 cup of daily passionflower tea, for 1 week improved sleep quality.
