Health Coach Tip - Troubleshoot Your Health

Troubleshooting is something we usually do at work for a computer problem or at home for the car… but the concept is easily applied to our personal health too. If your car starts making an unusual noise, you search for the source under the hood, looking for where it’s coming from and figuring out how to fix it.

The same thing applies to your body. When it starts to make noise, it’s time to pay attention... your body is trying to tell you something. The sooner you troubleshoot, the less likely the “noise” will lead to a bigger health issue.

Have you been sleeping poorly, gaining a few pounds, got a rash that wasn’t there before? Those “noises” or symptoms are not to be ignored! It’s time to look under the hood and find out what your body is trying to tell you.

When should you troubleshoot?

As soon as you start feeling out of sorts, the sooner the better.

What signs should you be looking for?

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Skin issues
  • Can’t fall asleep
  • Aches or pains
  • Bloat, gas, reflux
  • Headaches
  • Anything out of the norm that grabs your attention

What do you do now?

Look for the most obvious culprits in your life and reel them in. Sometimes a little mindfulness is all you need. For example:

Fatigue - Have you been going to bed later than usual because you’ve been binge watching a new show every night? Cut back to one episode instead of 3.

Weight gain - Have you been comfort eating during the pandemic? Look for some healthier recipes to satisfy your needs or get out and take a walk instead.

Can’t fall asleep - Have you been snacking late at night? Get back to some basic sleep hygiene and stop eating a few hours before you turn in for the night.

Bloat, gas, reflux - Have you been speed eating while working at your desk? Try some mindful eating practices - step away from your computer, sit in a chair, chew thoroughly, and put your fork down between bites. That might be all you need.

What is your body asking for? Is there a simple solution? Start with the obvious to see if you can get back on track. If you feel that you have waited too long and need some help, reach out to a functional medicine practitioner to help you dig deeper.
